So her spotlight episode felt unsparingly bleak: repeating high school, sponging off her relatives, arrested after a double-reverse statutory-rape con gone way wrong. Now, as a final unexpected feat of strength, creator Mitchell Hurwitz has returned to re-edit the entire season. I rewatched every episode of the original series at least twice. The sheer amount of effort that went into crafting this remix is impressive, though it feels like the essential idea here was stapling several different subplots together with new Ron Howard narration. Whenever I try to figure out the audience for this Remix , the whole thing starts to feel cosmically pointless.

Hurwitz joked in his explanatory letter that the whole remix was just a syndication play, which could just be honesty. On Netflix right now, the Remix is the only obvious version of season 4. Now the story of what happened when the one man who was holding his family together finally let go, and the separate journeys that eventually gave them no choice but to come back together. The different words offer a different promise.

The remix resets episodes to almost the exact same time as those original episodes. Sure, there are 22 episodes instead of 15, but none stretch beyond 23 minutes and the entire season is roughly eight minutes shorter.

That keeps the momentum humming, especially through the first four entries. Still, the remix moves faster, and with additional narration recorded by Ron Howard to help bind scenes together, the pace feels as chaotic as the first three seasons — in a good way.
